10 summer skin care tips

0-summer-skincare-tips-for-glowing-skin

Summer is undoubtedly one of the best times of year. From beach trips to lazy summer afternoons with good food and great company. The summer heat is perfect for a dip in the pool, but it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows for your skin. Summer heat can wreak havoc for your skin, from UV damage, to sweating more, oilier or drier skin and the dreaded sunburn. Fortunately there are plenty of easy tips and tricks that will help you take care of your skin this summer.

10 summer skin care tips for glowing skin

1. Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen!

Whether your skin is light or tanned, applying sunscreen every day is a great habit to get into. Sun damage dries out your skin and can prematurely age it over time.  Not to mention the health risks and potential sunburn that comes with frequent overexposure to the sun. In Australia, it’s especially important to protect yourself with our high levels of UV.  Applying an SPF foundation each morning or wearing sunscreen underneath your make-up, is a great way to start your beauty regime every morning.

2. Don’t neglect your scalp

It’s a common mistake to protect your skin everywhere else but completely forget about your scalp. To avoid white streaks of sunscreen in your hair (not a good look) use a sunscreen mist to cover up your part line, or just go with a good old fashioned sun hat.

3. Moisturise

One of the most important things you can do for your skin over the summer is to keep it hydrated. We recommend using a hydrating moisturiser each morning, and moisturising your entire body every night before bed. (and whenever you have a shower or wash your skin).

4. Gently cleanse, morning and night

While all that sunscreen and makeup sitting on your skin during the day is great to protect you, you need to give your skin the opportunity to breathe at night. After removing your makeup, a gentle cleanse in the morning and before you go to sleep will do the trick.

5. Give your skin a deep clean once a week

Daily cleansing is great to remove the surface layer of dirt and maintain your glow, but once per week is ideal to do a deep clean. Exfoliating scrubs or pore cleansing brushes can assist with cleansing your pores, removing dead skin cells, and leaving your skin feeling clean and fresh.

6. Don’t forget your lips

Just like anywhere else on your body, your lips need some TLC when summer rolls around. Keep a lip balm with SPF in your handbag, so that your lips can stay hydrated and protected from the sun all day long.

7. Stay cool with a refreshing mist

Proper hydration is key to having glowing skin during summer, but lathering on moisturiser every half hour doesn’t do much to cool you down. When on the go, keeping a cooling face mist handy, is the perfect solution. A quick spray will not only refresh you, but will also refresh and hydrate your skin.

8. Avoid hot showers

After being in the sun and heat all day, the last thing you want to do is subject your skin to a hot shower. Hot water will dry out your already exposed skin even further. End the day with a lukewarm shower or, if you can stand it, a cold one. You will feel refreshed and your skin will love you for it too.

9. Scrub dead skin away

Just like your face, your body needs a deep clean from time to time as well. Treat your body to a monthly body exfoliation.  Body scrubs and exfoliating gloves are great at removing any dead skin cells that build up from the dry, hot weather. Make sure to follow up with a moisturiser after your exfoliation.

10. Drink water and get your beauty sleep

Arguably the most effective summer skin care tip is to drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep. The reasoning is simple: if you aren’t hydrated and well rested, your skin won’t be either.

Keeping your skin feeling hydrated and fresh during summer can be tricky, but with a great routine, your skin will be feeling amazing. Remember that effective skin care relies on proper hydration and regular care, so as long as you get in the daily routine of caring for your skin you will glow all summer long.

The Best Natural Oil For Your Face

Often our skin care routine can suffer when modern life takes over. Rushing to get to work, taking the kids to school, looking after a household and family.  We are usually the last person on our list to get some self-care – including looking after our skin.  I am often asked “What is the best natural oil for your face?”, so I set off to find a beautiful nourishing face oil, that is suitable for ALL skin types!

The best natural oil for your face

I have combination skin, and to be honest ‘ageing skin’ (those dreaded words).  So finding and using a beautiful, natural face oil as part of my beauty routine was high priority.

There are many face oils on the market, so it can be hard to narrow it down to just one.  What was important to us, was that it was suitable for all skin types, which then narrows down the field a lot. We were so excited when we came across the Paudha Healing’s Nourish & Repair Face Oil, and their gorgeous range of natural skin care.

best-natural-oil-for-your- face-eye-dropper

Paudha Healing’s Nourish & Repair Face Oil is a unique blend of natural oils that have been carefully selected to provide maximum benefits to the skin, with minimal ingredients. The Nourish & Repair Face Oil is made using Jojoba Oil, Rosehip CO2 Extract, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Helianthus annus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Rosemary Extract, Essential Oils of Rose Geranium and Frankincense.

Jojoba oil is closest to the skin’s own natural sebum. It helps to modulate oil production, which makes it ideal for both oily and dry skin conditions. It also provides a protective barrier for the skin and is deeply moisturising. Rosehip oil is rich in vitamins A and E, which help fight the signs of premature ageing. While Calendula provides anti-inflammatory properties to calm the skin and reduce redness. The essential oils of frankincense and rose geranium also provide skin healing properties and a calming aroma.

Your skin will drink this oil up and be forever grateful!

The best natural face oil for dry skin

Although I have combination skin, it tends to be more dry than oily, so finding a face oil that worked for all skin types was an important item on my list.

I apply the Nourish & Repair Face Oil each morning before my make-up, and then use a Rose Quartz Facial Roller to reduce puffiness, improve skin tone and improve my skin elasticity.

I have oily skin, so I can’t use a face oil

So often I hear people say ‘I have oily skin, so I can’t use a face oil’, and they couldn’t be more wrong! By using products that are harsh and strip your face of natural oils, in fact means that your body will begin to overcompensate and produce even more oils.  This then leads to the clogging of pores and breakouts, which is not what we want for our skin.  Using an oil on your face can help you to balance your complexion naturally.

Natural face oil made in Australia

It’s important to me to try & support local businesses and Australian made where possible.  So I absolutely love that the Nourish & Repair Face Oil from Paudha Healing is made in our very own Blue Mountains, NSW here in Australia.  All their gorgeous skin care is lovingly handmade, making it extra special, and so wonderful to know that you are helping a family-owned and operated business.  Paudha Healing are also a Vegan and cruelty free brand, and most of their products also using certified organic ingredients, which is an extra tick of approval from me.

best-natural-oil-for-your-face-paudha-healingHow to apply the Nourish & Repair Face Oil

Using the dropper supplied, apply 2-3 drops to the palm of your hand and gently massage into your face.   You can use the natural face oil in place of your normal moisturiser, or before moisturising for added hydration.  It really is so simple & easy to include into your skincare routine.

The verdict – is this the best natural oil for your face?

I have been using this beautiful natural oil on our face for over a year, and we absolutely love it!  I have put it through its’ paces during both the warmer and cooler months and have been impressed with its’ versatility.   I like to use the face oil in a few different ways.  Firstly, I apply a few drops each morning before I use the Rose Quartz Facial Roller.  With their powers combined, the Nourish & Repair Face Oil and Quartz Facial Roller improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness and enhance your overall skin tone and complexion.  The coolness of the Quartz Facial Roller is just amazing…. and I always enjoy those few minutes of bliss each morning.  I then simply apply my foundation over the top of the face oil, and it acts just like a primer.  My foundation glides on after applying the face oil, and feels amazing.

I also apply the Nourish & Repair Face Oil after my evening moisturiser before I head to bed.  This allows  the face oil to assist in nourishing and repairing my skin each night.  The Paudha Healing Nourish & Repair Face oil is the best natural oil for your face, and we would highly recommend it!

Where can I buy Nourish & Repair Face Oil?

You can find this little pot of gold over at Paudha Healing – they have a gorgeous range of natural and organic skincare, and are proud to be a 100% Cruelty Free Australian skincare brand too!

3 Ingredients to Consider When Choosing Natural Baby Skincare Products

choosing-natural-baby-skincare-newborn

Having spent 9 luxurious months surrounded by water, newborn baby skin is super sensitive. As their first line of defence, your baby’s skin is a good place to start thinking about how to care for your precious little baby. As their skin is delicate and easily penetrable, you want to be sure your only using top quality, natural ingredients. Newborn skin hydrates within the first few weeks of life and so seeps up anything it meets – from clothes, cleaning products, lotions, balms, and the list goes on. So choosing natural baby skincare is so important to ensure your baby’s delicate skin receives the best start to life possible.

In the short term, you don’t want your beautiful baby suffering from rashes or respiratory issues. And with continued use over time, you don’t want to be using chemical laden products which can cause more severe health problems. It’s all about peace of mind for you mama, and the best natural products you can use on your baby, with the bonus of being more environmentally friendly too.

Choosing natural baby skincare products

choosing-natural-baby-skincare-little-baby-feet

Let’s look at three ingredients that are important to consider when it comes to choosing natural baby skincare products, and caring for your baby’s skin:

Endocrine Disruptors

These man-made chemicals can mimic or interact with hormones in the body. As you can imagine, this isn’t great for anyone who is pregnant, or trying to conceive, as you certainly don’t want anything messing with your natural balance of hormones. For babies, this isn’t the best way to start to life either. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, learning disabilities, diabetes, and fertility issues as we mentioned above.

Phthalates are one type of endocrine disruptor to be concerned about, which mimic oestrogen in the body.  They are easily absorbed into the skin, and can build up over time as the body doesn’t know how to process them. Issues can include kidney problems, infertility and birth defects (so especially one to avoid for the pregnant mamas too). Parabens have also been suggested to mimic hormones, and are next on our list.

Petroleum & Parabens

Parabens are used to stop the growth of fungus and harmful bacteria in skincare products. They act as a preservative, and are used to prolong shelf life.  Unfortunately, they have been detected in breast cancer tissue and linked to male infertility. However due to the lack of confirming research, there is currently no legislation in Australia to ban their use. We think they are something to be mindful of, and you’ll see them in the ingredients list on products as the following:

  • Methylparaben
  • Ethylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Butylparaben
  • Isobutylparaben

We also see a lot of petroleum derived ingredients in skincare products (yep, from crude oil). Firstly, they’re not good for the environment as they are a non-renewable resource. They have also been linked to cancer and are known to suffocate the skin by clogging up the pores. Not great for making sure bub’s skin can breathe and naturally regulate their temperature.

Some petroleum derived ingredients to look out for, include:

  • Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil)
  • Paraffin Wax
  • Petrolatum (Petroleum Jelly)
  • Propylene Glycol, PEGs (Polyethylene Glycol)
  • Polysorbates

Unnecessary Fragrances

You don’t need synthetic smells to mask that wonderful newborn baby smell! Always look out for those products that contain synthetic fragrances, as we often won’t even know what makes up these fragrances (as they are protected by ‘trade secrets’).  This means that legally, manufacturers don’t need to disclose the list of ingredients on the packaging. A lot of these are derived from either petroleum or coal tar. Yep, not ideal to be putting on baby’s highly absorbent skin. They often contain VOCs which research shows can link to cancer, central nervous system disorders and allergic reactions. These airborne chemicals make their way to our brain and internal organs via the nose. So we really don’t want to be piling them on the skin too.

A few quick tips to consider with unnecessary fragrances when choosing natural baby skincare:

  • Looking for water-based wipes rather than chemical laden, fragrance filled ones.
  • Switching to natural oils (such as coconut, olive, apricot or almond) rather than using ones containing petroleum.
  • Check the ingredients of nappy rash creams and opt for ones that you recognise the ingredients of (after all baby bottoms are super sensitive).
  • Switching out talc for a non-carcinogenic product such as arrowroot baby powder, or one made from cornstarch. Those talc baby powders have been linked to cancer, and some have even been shown to contain levels of asbestos!
  • Being wary of terms such as ‘hypoallergenic’, ‘fragrance-free’, ‘all natural’. These terms are not industry regulated so really can’t tell you all that much about the product. Only the ingredients list really can.
  • Avoid bathing baby too often. You want to keep all those natural moisturisers and vital nutrients in. Stick to just water only in the first few weeks.
  • Make use of natural oils for massage to keep skin hydrated and moisturised while avoiding any unnecessary and often unknown extras.
  • Keep your babies’ skin out of the sun for the first 6 months, with protective clothing being the best form of sun protection.

Generally, when choosing natural baby skincare, if you read an ingredient and you wouldn’t fancy eating it, it’s probably best not to put it on your baby’s skin either.

Natural deodorant that actually works – Black Chicken deodorant review

natural-deodorant-that-actuallyworks-black-chicken-deodorant-review
natural-deodorant-that-actually-works-black-chicken-deodorant-review

When I told my husband I was looking for a natural deodorant that actually works, he looked at me with those “you trying to be a hippy” eyes.  I wish I could be more free-spirited and get my ‘zen’ on, whilst doing yoga & pilates – but in all seriousness, I was looking for a natural deodorant that doesn’t contain all the nasties and chemicals like aluminium.   Whilst the premise behind aluminium is to temporarily plug the sweat ducts and prevent you from perspiring – we all know that sweating is your body’s way of cooling down.  Aluminium has also been linked to breast cancer, bone disorders, kidney problems + more!   So our quest to find an amazing natural deodorant that actually works, lead us to try out the Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant with Barrier Booster (for sensitive skin) and our friends at Sassy Organics generously sent us one to try out!

Natural deodorant that actually works – Black Chicken deodorant paste review

As much as we don’t often talk about our deodorant around the table at the local coffee shop, finding a natural deodorant that helps to stop or neutralise body odour can be really hard.  I had researched so many different products before I decided to try out the Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant, and because I often find I have quite sensitive skin, I was even more worried about finding the right one.

natural-deodorant-that-actuallyworks-black-chicken-deodorant-review

Natural deodorant for sensitive skin

I have tried a few different natural deodorant brands in the past.  Most of these were from years ago, and boy, things have sure progressed in recent times! One ingredient that is often used within natural deodorants is bi-carbonate soda. Whilst it is effective in many natural deodorants, it can often lead to a rash for some people – particularly those with sensitive skin.

Keeping this in mind, I decided that trying out the new Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste, which has a Barrier Booster for sensitive skin would be a fantastic deodorant to try.  With other gorgeous ingredients including: shea butter, coconut oil, borage seed oil, camellia tea oil, vitamin E oil, vegetable glycerin, candelilla wax, magnesium hydroxide, diatomaceous earth powder, tapioca, and essential oils including pink grapefruit, mandarin, geranium bourbon & ylang ylang.

Natural deodorant made in Australia

It’s important to me to try & support local businesses and Australian made where possible.  So I was extra excited when I found out that the Black Chicken Deodorant heralds from the coastal town of Byron Bay and is Aussie through and through.  They are also a Vegan and cruelty free brand, and their deodorant contains mostly certified organic ingredients, which is an extra tick of approval from me.

natural-deodorant-that-actually-works-black-chicken-deodorant-review

How to apply natural deodorant paste

To apply the deodorant paste, it is as simple as putting moisturiser on your armpits!  Simply grab a pea sized amount of the deodorant paste with your finger and gently rub it into your armpits until it is warm and dissolves.  That’s it – it couldn’t be easier!

The verdict – does Black Chicken natural deodorant paste actually work?

We put this little tub of magic to the test, and it certainly didn’t disappoint!  We have been using the Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste with Barrier Booster (for sensitive skin) for nearly 3 weeks and we have had a range of weather here in Queensland, including some ridiculously hot 35-40 degree days!  I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t scared that it wouldn’t hold up its’ end of the bargain.

Over the last 2-3 weeks I have included all my normal daily activities and some not-so-everyday activities too – eg. gardening up a storm and mowing, strength training, baking with a hot oven on (which always gets me a little ‘hot under the collar’) and a few long walks.

So between you and me, I actually couldn’t believe it – this natural deodorant paste actually works better than my old anti-perspirant spray deodorant!  I’m not easily converted, and I was extremely skeptical, but I am so pleased to say that I LOVE the Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste with Barrier Booster (for sensitive skin) and would highly recommend it!

Where can I buy the Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste with Barrier Booster?

You can find this little pot of gold over at Sassy Organics – they have a gorgeous range of natural, organic & vegan beauty, skincare & household products too!

If you loved this article, then we’d love you to share it with your friends – when you find something as good as this natural deodorant that actually works, it’s a crime to keep it to yourself!

The one skincare product busy mums can’t live without

olive-skin-serum

Today we are joined by guest blogger Sandra La Scala, natural beauty writer over at Botani, who shares with us the one skincare product that busy mums can’t live without – olive skin serum.

The one skincare product busy mums can’t live without

I have to admit, before kids, I was the perfect poster girl for treating my skin with TLC. I would cleanse, tone, apply an antioxidant serum, eye cream, sunscreen, exfoliating serum, moisturiser (light one in the day and heavier at night). I’d apply masks and exfoliate, and monthly facials were a must.

These days, I’m conscious of two things:

1. Time (rather, lack of it!)

Between the kids, husband and the house, I struggle to simply squeeze in those few minutes to wash my face and brush my teeth!

2. Toxins/chemicals

Not only does my body absorb around 60% of what goes onto my skin, but I’m conscious for my kids’ sake. When I’m not yelling at them, (don’t judge me) I’m showering them in smooches and I certainly don’t want any chemicals from my skincare (or makeup) to transfer onto their beautiful skin and hence INTO their little bodies. And for those of you with babies (my little one is 7 months old), you’d be familiar with the chin-or-nose-sucks…I don’t want them literally eating petroleum by-products or heavy perfumes!

I knew I discovered something amazing…

I had always used Rosehip oil to help with my dry skin. I even put up with the greasy feel and discoloured pillowcases because my skin felt moisturised. With my first pregnancy I used it all over my belly, and my white t-shirts all had massive yellow stains!! When I tried Botani’s Olive Skin Serum in 2015 (I used it in the lead up to my interview at Botani, that way I could at least say I’d tried one of their products), I was gobsmacked! I had NEVER felt anything so silky on my skin….it seriously hydrated my skin without the GREASY feel. And not just that sort of hydration you get from immediately applying ‘any’ cream or oil – my skin had begun feeling hydrated ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT! Well I just had to have that job! With a product like this – I just wanted to scream it out to the world!!

So here I am – 2 years later – still in love with the Olive Skin Serum and something I (and all my mummy friends now) absolutely cannot live without!

So, how did it face up to my two main concerns?

1. Time: this product takes 2 seconds to apply – and has OVER ten multipurpose uses!

  • hydrating serum
  • moisturiser
  • natural makeup primer
  • cuticle oil
  • naturally anti-ageing
  • fades brown pigmentation / age spots
  • fades scars
  • treats eczema, psoriasis & very dry skin conditions
  • add to the bath for extra hydration
  • use on baby’s skin (massage / dry skin / bath)
  • breastfeeding mums can treat their cracked nipples
  • fades dark circles under eyes

My go-to daily skincare routine is often: cleanse well, and use the Olive Skin Serum whilst my skin is still damp (this helps it to immediately absorb).

2. Toxins

Olive Skin Serum contains 99.7% pure active Olive Squalene.  Basically, Squalene is already present in our skin, but it decreases as we age. The Squalene used in the Olive Skin Serum is totally natural (it’s extracted from Olive pips) and even BIO-COMPATIBLE with our skin! It is a natural plant active, antioxidant, skin cell rejuvenator….I could go on and on! (Read more about Squalene here).

So there you have it – a multipurpose, skin-friendly, mum-friendly and even chin-sucking baby friendly skin saviour that we deem is “as vital to skin as water is to life” – for a good reason!
