The holiday season is upon us and there are tempting Christmas treats in supermarkets and shops everywhere you go. It’s also a favourite time of year for families to do some Christmas baking. And for good reason, as nothing says ‘Christmas time’ more than the smell and taste of freshly baked cookies or other Christmas treats. Baked goods also make great little stocking stuffers and Christmas gifts to give to friends, teachers, co-workers, and family.

While Christmas is often a time for indulgence, there are plenty of alternatives to enjoy all your favourite Christmas treats in a healthier way.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy shortbread recipe this Christmas, you can’t go past this super simple, four-ingredient refined sugar-free version. Shortbread is one of those recipes that has to be baked at Christmas time in my household. While there is plenty of store-bought shortbread out there, nothing compares to freshly baked shortbread cookies straight out of the oven.

If you want to make your shortbread extra Christmassy, add some flair by gently pressing in some red and green sprinkles before you bake them. When they come out of the oven you’ll have a healthy classic treat and your home will be filled with the aroma of freshly baked cookies and remind you of Christmas as a child.

Christmas time wouldn’t feel the same without the all-time classic treat, rum balls. As the name suggests, this one isn’t made up of 100% wholesome goodness, but the reality of rum balls is that you can’t have them without rum and I promise that every other ingredient in there is good for you.

These rum balls also make a perfect after-dinner treat with a cup of coffee or tea. They bring that loved, festive flavour without all the gluten and sugar that wreaks havoc on our tummies. If you have little ones, don’t worry, they can enjoy these holiday favourites too. Just omit the rum and voila, a Christmas treat for all ages.
