Summer is undoubtedly one of the best times of year. From beach trips to lazy summer afternoons with good food and great company. The summer heat is perfect for a dip in the pool, but it isn’t all sunshine and rainbows for your skin. Summer heat can wreak havoc for your skin, from UV damage, to sweating more, oilier or drier skin and the dreaded sunburn. Fortunately there are plenty of easy tips and tricks that will help you take care of your skin this summer.
10 summer skin care tips for glowing skin
1. Sunscreen Sunscreen Sunscreen!
Whether your skin is light or tanned, applying sunscreen every day is a great habit to get into. Sun damage dries out your skin and can prematurely age it over time. Not to mention the health risks and potential sunburn that comes with frequent overexposure to the sun. In Australia, it’s especially important to protect yourself with our high levels of UV. Applying an SPF foundation each morning or wearing sunscreen underneath your make-up, is a great way to start your beauty regime every morning.
2. Don’t neglect your scalp
It’s a common mistake to protect your skin everywhere else but completely forget about your scalp. To avoid white streaks of sunscreen in your hair (not a good look) use a sunscreen mist to cover up your part line, or just go with a good old fashioned sun hat.
One of the most important things you can do for your skin over the summer is to keep it hydrated. We recommend using a hydrating moisturiser each morning, and moisturising your entire body every night before bed. (and whenever you have a shower or wash your skin).
4. Gently cleanse, morning and night
While all that sunscreen and makeup sitting on your skin during the day is great to protect you, you need to give your skin the opportunity to breathe at night. After removing your makeup, a gentle cleanse in the morning and before you go to sleep will do the trick.
5. Give your skin a deep clean once a week
Daily cleansing is great to remove the surface layer of dirt and maintain your glow, but once per week is ideal to do a deep clean. Exfoliating scrubs or pore cleansing brushes can assist with cleansing your pores, removing dead skin cells, and leaving your skin feeling clean and fresh.
6. Don’t forget your lips
Just like anywhere else on your body, your lips need some TLC when summer rolls around. Keep a lip balm with SPF in your handbag, so that your lips can stay hydrated and protected from the sun all day long.
7. Stay cool with a refreshing mist
Proper hydration is key to having glowing skin during summer, but lathering on moisturiser every half hour doesn’t do much to cool you down. When on the go, keeping a cooling face mist handy, is the perfect solution. A quick spray will not only refresh you, but will also refresh and hydrate your skin.
8. Avoid hot showers
After being in the sun and heat all day, the last thing you want to do is subject your skin to a hot shower. Hot water will dry out your already exposed skin even further. End the day with a lukewarm shower or, if you can stand it, a cold one. You will feel refreshed and your skin will love you for it too.
9. Scrub dead skin away
Just like your face, your body needs a deep clean from time to time as well. Treat your body to a monthly body exfoliation. Body scrubs and exfoliating gloves are great at removing any dead skin cells that build up from the dry, hot weather. Make sure to follow up with a moisturiser after your exfoliation.
10. Drink water and get your beauty sleep
Arguably the most effective summer skin care tip is to drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep. The reasoning is simple: if you aren’t hydrated and well rested, your skin won’t be either.
Keeping your skin feeling hydrated and fresh during summer can be tricky, but with a great routine, your skin will be feeling amazing. Remember that effective skin care relies on proper hydration and regular care, so as long as you get in the daily routine of caring for your skin you will glow all summer long.
